Interlaken Youth Hostel (Best Pick): This is by far the most popular hostel in Interlaken! A welcome retreat for travelers of all sorts. Featuring a broad range of rooms and a killer location alongside the railway station, staying here is for those who want to be close to everything such as transportation, restaurants, cafes, shops, etc.

Not to mention this youth hostel offers fun games, bike rentals, and a restaurant. I didn’t mind paying a little extra for their 3-course meals during dinner– the food was absolutely delicious! The ambiance in this place is more like a hotel than a hostel yet the price still caters to your budget. Location-wise, this is a highly recommended and cheap hostel when you’re visiting Interlaken!

Balmers Backpackers Hostel (Party Hostel): This hostel is the best in the area for party lovers and budget travelers alike. But if you’re a type of traveler who likes a party scene, then Balmers Backpackers Hostel is your best pick! Every night, this adult hostel hosts fun activities that involved disco music and drinking games.

With great music and a beer in your hand, you’ll definitely make new friends here. So enjoy the party at night and their amenities and activities during the day. Backpackers Villa Sonnenhof – Hostel Interlaken (Where I stayed): Nestled in the heart of the Bernese Oberland with a stunning mountain backdrop is this beautiful hostel. Backpackers Villa Sonnenhof offers backpackers a comfortable stay and amazing views from the room. This is a family-friendly hostel in Interlaken with available cots for a little charge.

What I like more about this property aside from the location are the stylish rooms that are individually decorated and the availability of tables and chairs around the hostel to relax after tiring outdoor activities. I stayed here on two occasions and really liked that it had a washing machine and each customer got a free machine coffee each day. There’s a quiet study room for digital nomads like me and a kitchen for those who like to save money by cooking a meal instead of eating out. On top of that, the staff are multilingual and are always eager to help you with anything.

There is a wide range of rooms to choose from and like any other hostels in town, they provide a communal kitchen so you cook or store food in the fridge. This is what I love the most in this property aside from the cute floral decorations in the rooms. But backpackers love the entire service this property provides. SWITZERLAND BUDGET BACKPACKING GUIDE: In this blog, I talk about the cost of travel and how to travel around Switzerland on the cheap with some tips and hacks from my experience.

20 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: MY SWITZERLAND TRAVEL TIPS: You probably didn’t even think of half of these. I didn’t either and figured many of these tips out the hard way.

OPTION 1: Switzerland trains, buses, and cable cars are EXPENSIVE! I found the best way to get around cheaply was to buy the Swiss Half-Fare Card before I arrived. It gives you 50% off every regular train, bus, and even many cable cars. It only costs $150 USD but pays itself off in just a few days with many train tickets in Switzerland costing close to $100 alone. OPTION 2: The second option is to get the Swiss Travel Pass, which gives you unlimited train, bus, and (many) cable car rides but it’s pretty expensive at around $100 USD per day so if you don’t travel each day it isn’t worth it. OPTION 3: The final option is to get the FLEXI Swiss Travel Pass, which allows you to buy 8 days’ worth of transit but you can choose the night before if you want to activate the next day. That way you don’t need to travel every day to get your money’s worth, you can just activate the FLEXI Swiss Travel Pass on the days where you are doing sizeable transits. My advice is to book the Swiss Half-Fare Card or the FLEXI Swiss Travel Pass in advance before your trip so it’s ready to go when you arrive.
