Thousand Island Viewpoint on Nusa Penida (Pulau Seribu)

The Thousand Island Viewpoint (Pulau Seribu) is a spectacular spot located on Nusa Penida, an island off the southeast coast of Bali. This cliff-side viewpoint offers panoramic views of the surrounding small islands or ‘thousand islands’, hence the name. From here, you can see the turquoise blue sea, dramatic cliff formations, lush green vegetation, and if you look closely, you can spot the iconic Raja Lima Islands and Atuh Beach.

Thousand Island Viewpoint on Nusa Penida

In this blog post, I’ll share all the details about the Thousand Island Viewpoint on Nusa Penida. There are a few things you need to know about how to get there, opening times, entrance fees and the treehouse. One of the best ways to visit Thousand Island Viewpoint and other beaches and lookouts is on this Ultimate Nusa Penida Day Trip Tour from Bali or you can rent a car on Nusa Penida with private driver.

Where is the Thousand Island Viewpoint on Nusa Penida

Thousand Island (Pulau Seribu) Viewpoint is located on the east coast of Nusa Penida Island. The viewpoint is one of the attractions on the island and looks along the beautiful coast of Nusa Penida. It’s not far from the famous Atuh Beach and Diamond Beach and it could be a good idea to combine these three spots into one day!

The island is quite big and it can take over an hour to cruise from one side to another depending on where your accommodation is located. The roads are improving very quickly throughout Nusa Penida as tourist traffic increases but if you are a novice scooter driver this is gonna be an interesting journey for you! If you’re not a confident moped driver, it’s best to rent a car on Nusa Penida with private driver.

A motorbike costs a little bit more than on Bali mainland. We got ours for 70,000 rupiah per day with a full tank of gas. It wasn’t deal of the year but don’t expect to haggle down to 40,000 rupiah like you might manage on the streets of Canggu or Kuta.

The actual pin on Google Maps shows the location as ‘Atuh King Five Nusa Penida’. Not sure what that means exactly but this is the Thousand Island (Pulau Seribu) Viewpoint according to the ticket man when we parked our moped.

Thousand Island (Pulau Seribu) Viewpoint on Nusa Penida

Firstly, you might be wondering what Pulau Seribu means and it actually just means Thousand Island in Bahasa (Indonesian). This location is sometimes referred to as Pulau Seribu and sometimes as the Thousand Island Viewpoint so I thought I would reference both.

Thousand Island viewpoint or Pulau Seribu is one of my favorite spots on Nusa Penida. The parking and entrance was 10,000 rupiah per person, which is less than $1 USD (This may have increased). There is a small warung with snacks, drinks and simple hot meals at the top of the cliff. You won’t need to pack a big lunch as the hike is only short but it can get steamy so bring a water bottle.

There are several viewpoints that have had fences and structures added to them for the benefit of tourists. There are huge drop-offs here so the fences are to keep tourists safe! To get to the first viewpoint you need to climb down the steep stairway for about 10 minutes. Once we reached this first viewpoint we were pretty awestruck.

The view is incredible! We could see a small little empty beach sitting at the bottom of the cliff. It was paradise.

We continued on to the second viewpoint and then to the Instagram famous Tree House known as Rumah Pohon. There was nobody inside but the door was locked. It can be rented out on Booking.com or Airbnb but it’s literally just a wooden hut with a view for about $70 a night. We took a few photos here and debated whether or not we would stay out here. We all concluded it would be worth it for the feeling of enjoying the sunrise on the balcony of the treehouse!

The final viewpoints are a shrine and there is a little hut offering some much-needed shade. The day we went we were almost melting so this was a good reprieve.

If you are lucky enough to stay at the Nusa Penida Treehouse enjoy your stay but if not definitely still come and adventure at Thousand Island (Pulau Seribu) Viewpoint!

SWIM WITH MANTA RAYS ON NUSA PENIDA!

a man swimming under a manta ray in the ocean.
a large body of water next to a cliff.

BEST TOUR: Enjoy swimming with Manta Rays on Nusa Penida Island with the most popular tour in Bali.

Option 1: Manta Ray Nusa Penida Tour (from Bali)

Option 2: Manta Ray Snorkel Tour (from Penida)

QUICK TIPS FOR PULAU SERIBU VIEWPOINT

  1. Location: The viewpoint is located on the northeastern side of Nusa Penida, overlooking the ocean.
  2. Access: The route to the viewpoint can be challenging, with steep and rugged terrain. Ensure you have suitable footwear and consider hiring a local guide for a safe journey.
  3. View: The viewpoint offers panoramic views of the smaller islands and rock formations scattered across the ocean, which appear to be a “thousand islands” from this vantage point. You can also spot the iconic Tree House from here.
  4. Best Time to Visit: Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to visit for lesser crowds and beautiful sunrise or sunset views.
  5. Amenities: There are small stalls selling drinks and snacks at the top. Remember to carry water and sunscreen, as it can get quite hot during the day.
  6. Entrance Fee: There’s a small entrance fee to access the viewpoint. The amount can change, so it’s good to have some local currency on hand.
  7. Safety: The edges at the viewpoint can be dangerous, so be careful and stay within any marked safety areas.
  8. Respect: The viewpoint is part of the local community’s area, so respect the environment, keep it clean, and follow any local rules or guidelines.
  9. Stay Options: The famous Tree House (Rumah Pohon) is nearby and can be rented for an overnight stay, providing a unique lodging experience.

TOP 3 PLACES TO STAY ON NUSA PENIDA

I’ve written a massive, detailed guide about the Best Places To Stay on Nusa Penida….BUT If you just want me three favorites right now, here they are!

a pool with lounge chairs and a thatched roof.
the swimming pool at or close to the villa.

How to get to the Nusa Islands

There are three main options to get to Nusa Penida depending on your budget and how many logistics you want to manage. Here are the three options with the cheapest first:

  1. Book your ticket: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Lembongan – Book a regular ferry that leaves from Sanur to Nusa Penida on the reliable website 12go. You then need to moped or taxi across to Nusa Penida via another ferry/boat.
  2. Book a fast boat: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option is great as you go direct from Bali to Penida without having to stop in Lembongan. This option is only slightly more expensive than stopping in Lembongan. This is my favorite option of the three and can be booked on Klook.
  3. Book a fast boat with hotel pick-up: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option includes a fast boat from Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida but also includes pick-up from your hotel in Bali in a van. This option from GetYourGuide is a bit more expensive but takes all the hassle out of the transit from Bali to Nusa Penida.
