Located between Portugal and the northwest coast of Africa, Madeira Island is the largest island of the Portuguese archipelago. While the rest of Europe battles a cold winter, Madeira enjoys great weather all year! It has dramatic cliffs, volcanic rock pools, lush UNESCO forests, great levada walks, and incredible hiking trails. There are a lot of distinctively different regions when considering where to stay in Madeira. In this article, I will help you decide on a region and find the best places to stay within that region on Madeira Island.

This article is divided into eight different regions of Madeira Island and for each region, I’ve handpicked the best luxury hotels, family-pick hotels, and budget accommodations to help you consider which area and accommodation are the best for you. After staying on the island for more than three months, I learned what each different region can offer and which type of traveler should stay where.

Before I delve into the article, I’ll just let you know that the Les Suites at Cliff Bay is by far my favorite accommodation choice on Madeira Island.

When you book your Madeira Rental Car online, I personally recommend and always use Discover Cars. They search for both local and international companies, so you get the best deal! MUST Read: Guide to Renting a Car on Madeira

Situated on the island’s southwest coast, Funchal is the capital city of Madeira which is home to several luxury hotels, fabulous museums, old churches, and verdant botanical gardens. Most visitors are base here because there are plenty of restaurants, bars, and tour agencies in the traditional streets of the old town. You’ll find heaps of accommodation to choose from that surely suits everyone’s budget.

I spent an entire month based in Funchal and it’s a perfect mix of culture, food, and history while also being a central base for adventures on day trips with or without a car.

Belmond Reid’s Palace is renowned for its world-class service, insane views, traditional English afternoon tea, and sumptuous cuisine. Undoubtedly, the best luxury hotel in Funchal and probably the overall best place to stay in Madeira.

Casa Branca Apartments (Where I stayed): Casa Branca apartments is where I stayed for two months at the end of my six months in Madeira. For me, this is the perfect location in Madeira. It was walking distance to cafes, bars, and everything in downtown/old-town Funchal, yet far enough away from the city center that I had some peace and quiet.

The apartment has its own parking (highly valuable in Funchal) and is just minutes away from connecting to the highway so unlike being directly in Funchal you can get in and out quickly so it’s a great base.

This is a very modern complex that has three levels all of which have self-contained apartments. I stayed on floor two and floor three for a month each. The interior is very modern and spacious with fancy amenities and homely touches like coffee makers, a toaster, a huge TV with Netflix, a table, and chair for working, and a big bathroom. The best part about the apartment was the huge window that is basically an entire wall looking out over Funchal and up to the mountains. This is where I did all my weather checks as I could see half of the island.

Calheta is popular with tourists and families because it is on the sunny side of the island. You’ll find one of the few sandy beaches here in Calheta and even when other parts of the island are raining, Calheta is usually sunny. There are many activities on offer such as snorkeling, canoeing, windsurfing, paragliding, and more.

It is the island’s main core for banana plantations, vineyards, and sugar-cane production. It is also famous for its beautiful sunsets and hiking trails. I stayed in Calheta for my first five weeks in Madeira Island and enjoyed the daily dose of sunshine it was a good base for all of the central and western hikes and viewpoints.

I hope this guide helped you choose where to stay in Madeira. There are some truly epic hotels in Madeira and some of the resorts have incredible locations. I’m sure you will have a great stay at your accommodation on Madeira Island.

Throughout my six months on Madeira Island, I stayed in multiple accommodations. My favorite regions to stay in were Funchal and Canico de Baixo. I’ve created several guides to help you find the right region for you and a great hotel or apartment.

I spent six months exploring Madeira and the nearby island of Porto Santo. These are some of my most popular guides about the region that you may be interested in.

Many Thanks for this Jackson. Very timely as I'm heading out to Madeira in a few weeks. I've seen lots of sites noting a half dozen of the most popular listed hikes. But now I'll have a chance to check some lesser known and less crowded hikes and climbs. Terrific work ! Cheers Ed ( I've followed your posts since 2018 when I was at Everest ! Inspirational )
