THE WEEKLY #74: I’M A DRONE CRASH SURVIVOR

THE WEEKLY #74: I’M A DRONE CRASH SURVIVOR

I’ve been flying my DJI Mavic drone for almost 6 months now. I’m not an expert pilot, I just send it up in the air and look around snapping some photos. I don’t fly with much caution and finally, this caught up with me.

We were in Socorro on an island hopping trip. Jorden and Josh were in the middle of a lake on a canoe and I was trying to film a pull-away drone shot. I had my angles horribly wrong and things didn’t go to plan. I was flying about two meters above the surface level of the lake and shot back at full speed into an island in the middle of the lake, which was covered in trees.

Luckily the drone found a gap in the branches and managed to perch itself safely above the water. A little bit further to the left or right and it would have been goodbye to the drone as it splashed into the lake. I then watched the live stream as Jorden and Josh went on the rescue mission to save the drone.

They completed the mission and returned the drone. There was hardly a scratch on it and the gimbal worked just fine. It was a good wake-up call nonetheless and I will fly with a little more precaution and precision in the future.

This week we visited Sugba Lagoon, which is a classic Philippines blue lagoon. I have already thrown up a full blog post about Sugba Lagoon, which you can check out by clicking below. Some of the drone shots from Sugba are below this article also.

We also visited TakTak waterfall where Jorden lost and then dove in low visibility water to recover his GoPro. It was a week of near misses with our camera gear. The blog post for TakTak falls with all the photos is below:

Another highlight of this week was heading up to Pacifico Beach in the north. It was about an hour and a half drive but we met up with the girls from @thesuncrew. Our mission was a beach clean up with a group of local kids followed by a surf session altogether. Too many laughs were finished off by a big local feast of fresh fish and rice.

Huge thanks to this awesome crew for travelling up to Pacifico to join our beach clean and surf today ? We had 45 stoked kids (our new record) join in our beach clean! So cool to meet legends like you guys, setting an amazing example for other travellers about giving back to the island and the local kids ? Today marks the start of my last week on Siargao after 3 epic weeks here already. We plan to hit a few off the beaten path spots like an unknown hike and a few other hidden gems over the next few days. The Siargao guide blog post is in the works and will be your go-to resource when you head out to Siargao. Stay tuned for that one.

Below are all of my favorite images from this week! Shot on my Sony a7ii and Dji Mavic Drone.

Hope you all had a great week!
