THE WEEKLY #298: CLOSEST I’VE BEEN TO AN ISLAND IN A WHILE

THE WEEKLY #298: CLOSEST I’VE BEEN TO AN ISLAND IN A WHILE

Island Peak, locally known as Imja Tse, offers a tough challenge and incredible views of the Himalayas. At 6,189m, it is a tough test for many mountaineers and trekkers at such high altitudes. The peak is found in the Chukkung Valley and despite it’s height, the peak seems quite small while surrounded by the huge peaks of the Himalayas like Lhotse, Baruntse and Nuptse.

This spectacular 6000m peak was actually used as a training peak by Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing in 1953. The route they discovered is the same one that is used today and Island Peak is still a popular training peak for mountaineers attempting to climb Mount Everest.

I set off to climb Island Peak but also to document the entire journey with my aerial photography and regular camera setup. It is to be noted that there is an expensive drone permit required to fly in the Khumbu region, which our company handled for us. I trekked in and climbed with Seven Summit Treks. Climbing with SST was my favorite experience so far of any of my expeditions. They were super professional, handled any loose ends, and managed all logistics when required. They also have the best base camp set-up and a friendly atmosphere no matter if you are a climbing legend or a newcomer like me.

I’ve been to Imja Tse and photographed it but your photos show the mountain even as a person who has been there can see something new. You have one mountain off to the east several times in the photos. What is the name of that mountain?
