WAIKIKI ACCOMMODATION: BEST HOTELS GUIDE

Jul 6, 2017

Hawaii is paradise on earth, the dream vacation spot, and the ultimate getaway but where should you stay while you are enjoying the beautiful beaches and the relaxed island life? I lived in Waikiki, Oahu for two years and know all of the best hotels, locations, and tips to help make sure you select the best Waikiki accommodation for you and your family and friends.

Waikiki is the most popular place for accommodation on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The hotel strip is a prime spot for nightlife, restaurants and of course enjoying the palm tree-lined beaches. Learning how to surf or sipping a Mai Tai cocktail from a beach bar will become a daily routine, as you walk only meters from your Waikiki accommodation.

Before you choose a hotel there are a few things to know. Waikiki is the area between Ala Moana Beach and Diamond Head Crater. It is a long strip and booking at one end of the strip can give you quite a different experience than booking in the middle. While there is no bad area to stay in Waikiki, be aware most of the cheaper hotels are several blocks back from the beach. However, there are a few mid-range hotels with beach-front location such as the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel

The Hilton Hawaiian Village, The Halekulani, and the Sheraton are among the most famous hotels on the strip.

There are four categories in this blog post to help you pick the perfect accommodation:

  • Five Most Popular Waikiki Hotels
  • Best Value for Money Waikiki Accommodation
  • Best Budget Waikiki hotels

Best Value for money Waikiki Accommodation

Why I selected these Waikiki Hotels: Each of these hotels represents the best value for money because not only do they still have most of the luxury trimmings at half of the cost of the most expensive hotels, but they are also still within a couple of minutes of the shore or they are still on the beach! The other reason these hotels are the best value for money is they all have a pool. You might think who needs a pool when you have the beach but you will be surprised how often you wind down a long day of island adventures sipping a beer or a cocktail in the comfort of your hotel pool. These hotels are essentially getting you as close to Waikiki Beach as possible, with a private hotel pool for the lowest price available. Booking one of these hotels means you will have a little extra cash to spend on a convertible car rental, para-sailing or a fancy dinner each night.

Best Family Waikiki Accommodation

A family vacation to Oahu, Hawaii is likely going to be the best time of your life and your kids won’t ever want to leave. Can you blame them? I selected the hotels with the most kid-friendly pools, activities and a central location with beachfront access. The prices quoted below are for two adults and two children for a one-night stay. Most of these hotels offer activities for kids and cater to tourists with custom made family tours to popular sites like snorkeling at Hanauma Bay or Para-sailing in Waikiki. TIP: Be sure to hang around the Hilton Hawaiian Village on a Friday even if you don’t stay there. Each Friday night at 7:45 a massive firework show rocks off from the shores of Waikiki Beach after a traditional performance inside the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Best Budget Waikiki Accommodation

One of the best ways to have the most awesome island adventures is to save money on your hotel and spend it on the activities around the island. Most of the best things to do on Oahu are free anyway. So if you can grab a cheap hotel and enjoy the free hikes and beaches around the island it’s possible to spend a total of $100 or less for food and accommodation. These are the best budget Waikiki accommodation options that are still within walking distance to the beach. There are several options around the same price bracket, but you don’t want to come to Hawaii and have to walk 3km’s to the beach every day because you are staying in the suburbs. If you book one of these options below you can rest assured you won’t have to take a taxi each time you want to enjoy a surf!
