Devrent Valley (Imaginary Valley) in Cappadocia, Turkey

Devrent Valley (Imaginary Valley) in Cappadocia, Turkey

Devrent Valley in Cappadocia (also known as Imaginary Valley) is a beautiful valley full of unique rock formations, many of which are said to resemble animal shapes. The beauty of this spot in Cappadocia is that has very easy driving access and isn’t as crowded as the open-air museums and iconic cave dwelling locations.

 DEVRENT VALLEY IN CAPPADOCIA

In this blog post, I will share everything you need to know before visiting Devrent Valley.

HOW TO GET TO DEVRENT VALLEY

The most popular region for tourists to stay while exploring Cappadocia is a town called Goreme. Uchisar is the other nearby town, which is also an option but Goreme is the popular choice by far. Goreme is packed with hotels, restaurants, and cafes, while Uchisar is a little quieter.

From Goreme town center to Devrent Valley the distance is 9km, which takes 18 minutes by drive.

We decided to walk there but after only five minutes of walking, we were picked up by locals and they dropped us all the way to Devrent Valley. This is pretty common in Cappadocia.

There are a few other modes of transport in Cappadocia that I will detail below, although I suggest walking and trekking because there are lots to see on the way to each attraction, and locals will pick you up and drop you further down your route. We never tried to hitchhike but on one day we were gifted three separate lifts.

MY EXPERIENCE AT DEVRENT VALLEY

I hadn’t heard too much about Devrent Valley in Cappadocia but that is normally a good sign. We set off and hitchhiked our way into Devrent Valley. It is a pretty easy spot to hitchhike too because most tourists are visiting one of a number of attractions in the area such as Pasabag Fair Chimneys or the Zelve Open-Air Museum. If you can get a ride to one of those you are most of the way there.

When we arrived at Devrent Valley, we weren’t overwhelmed. It didn’t seem too much different to other spots in Cappadocia and we had just made a big hitchhike effort to get out here. Had we made a mistake? The answer was NO!

The beauty of Devrent Valley is that unlike other sites in Cappadocia you can immerse yourself amongst the earth’s pillars and rock formations. You can explore and discover as you wind your way up the steep, slippery hills. If you are willing to get off the beaten path, you will enjoy wandering through Devrent Valley and adventuring amongst these unique natural structures.

THE 3 MOST POPULAR CAPPADOCIA TOURS

Having said that, most tourists come to Devrent Valley to take cliche photos of them balancing a rock under their fingers or in their palms. I think it must be included in some tours because there were a lot of tour buses that stop, let their customers out for a photo then bundle them back inside. It was honestly pretty funny to watch. I even made my friend Khabib join in on the fun…

Devrent Valley (sometimes spelled Dervent Valley) is also known as Imaginary Valley and although there are no cave churches here like the other valleys, there are quite a few unique rock formations that will spark your imagination. It is said that there are a number of rock formations within the valley that resemble animals such as a camel, snakes, seals, and dolphins. There is definitely one animal rock formation near the road that resembles a camel. It has been fenced off and seems to be the star attraction at Devrent Valley.
